August 31, 2025Multi-stakeholder hearing on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action
The President of the General Assembly, with the support of UN-Women, convened an interactive multi-stakeholder hearing on Beijing+30 on the margins of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, that took place last 24th of July in the UN Headquarters in New York, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 79/288, entitled “Scope, modalities, format and organization of the high-level meeting on the thirtieth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women”, as part of the preparations for the high-level meeting on Beijing+30 of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
The Hearing offered a vibrant and inclusive space with diverse voices from across Member States, the UN System, civil society, youth, parliamentarians, private sector, and philanthropy to reflect on the most urgent priorities for gender equality and the rights and empowerment of women and girls, and to position the Beijing+30 Action Agenda ahead of the September meeting as a concrete offer to close the implementation gap and accelerate progress towards the SDGs and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
The Hearing was a clear demonstration of the power of multistakeholder partnerships and the continued appetite and demand to share leadership and to pool knowledge, expertise, resources and networks.
UN Women Executive Director, Sima Bahous, emphasized that the promises of 1995 remain unfinished – but within reach, if structural reforms are accelerated. Young leaders from Generation Equality called for stronger intergenerational solidarity and demanded greater access to decision-making spaces, particularly in peacebuilding and climate governance. Civil society leaders from the Global South pushed for financing and accountability frameworks that reflect women’s diverse realities.
This event served as a milestone in the Beijing+30 journey – reaffirming that change will not come from incremental efforts alone, but from collective disruption of patriarchal systems.
