Την περσμένη βδομάδα η Μελίνα και Μαίρη Πύργου βρεθήκαν στη Βομβάη και είχαν την ευκαιρία να συναντηθούν με την Dr Nandita Gandhi, Co Director του Akshara Centre. Κατά τη συνάντηση η Dr Gandhi τις ενημέρωσε για τη σημαντική εργασία που κάνει η οργάνωση τους, για την αντιμετώπιση της βίας κατά των γυναικών, την εκπαίδευση και κυρίως για την οικονομική ενδυνάμωση των γυναικών της υπαίθρου.

Στη συνάντηση η Μαίρη και Μελίνα Πύργου ενημέρωσαν την Dr Gandhi για τα μέτρα που προωθούνται στην Κύπρο και για το συνέδριο που θα οργανώσει το European Gender Budgeting Network και προσκάλεσαν το Akshara Centre στο Ευρωπαϊκό συνέδριο. Η συμμετοχή οικονομολόγων, εμπειρογνωμόνων και οργανώσεων, από γειτονικές χώρες της ΕΕ, στο συνέδριο του EGBN, που θα διοργανωθεί στην Κύπρο στις 26 και 27 Μαρτίου 2026 θεωρείται σημαντική από τις διοργανώτριες διότι τα θέματα που θα συζητηθούν αφορούν όλες τις γυναίκες.

Παρά το γεγονός ότι το Akshara Centre γνωρίζει για τον έμφυλο προϋπολογισμό, δεν εμπλέκεται ενεργά στην προώθηση του, λόγω των άλλων δραστηριοτήτων του, αλλά μας ενημέρωσαν ότι υπάρχουν οργανώσεις που ασχολούνται με αυτό το θέμα και θα μας φέρουν σε επαφή.

Η επίσκεψη στην Ινδία ήταν μια μοναδική εμπειρία και μας βοήθησε να κατανοήσουμε τα πολλά προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζουν και πρέπει να λύσουν οι οργανώσεις. Μας βοήθησε επίσης να δούμε πως εργάζονται οι μη-κυβερνητικοί οργανισμοί με τη βοήθεια χορηγών, να λύσουν τα σοβαρά προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζει η κοινωνία. Μάθαμε πολλά και θαυμάσαμε την αφοσίωση τους, την υπομονή τους, την επιμονή τους! Έχουμε να μάθουμε πολλά από αυτές τις οργανώσεις!

Visiting India and a Womans organisation was a unique and remarcable experience.

Last week Mary and Melina Pyrgou had the opportunity to meet in Bombay, India, Dr Nandita Gandhi, Co Director of Akshara Centre. During our meeting Dr Gandhi informed them about the important work they do, especially, their effort to eliminate violence against women and to empower financially, women. they also talked about the challenges the Indian organizations face, but most importantly they learned about the positive results that come out of their continuous efforts.

At the meeting Dr Nandita Gandhi was informed about the European conference on Gender Budgeting that the European Gender Budgeting Network will organize next March in Cyprus and was invited to participate, because the European organizing committee, wants to invite at the conference, women economists, women experts and women’s organizations from neighboring countries of the European Union.

Although Akshara Centre is aware of gender budgeting, they are not very actively involved. However, they know other organizations which push for gender budgeting and they promised to send relevant information.

Visiting India, learning about the many problems that Organizations have to overcome, in such a rather poor and densely populated country, but most importantly how some organizations work in order to help the people and especially women in the countryside, was a real experience for us. We admired their dedication, their patience and their perseverance! We have a lot to learn from them.
