July 1, 2022The university of Berkely one of the top universities in the world was established in 1863, and it started enrolling girls after 1870. In 1881 only 10% of the bachelor’s degrees granted by the univrsity went to women. The limited number of girls that pursued univercity education was due to the belief that girls who were educated would face reproduction problems. In fact one of the most popular books that circulated at the time, Sex in education by the Harvard medical school physician Edward Clarke argued that women who were educated in the same fashion as boys would face an inabiblity to conceive and produce healthy children, life long ilnesses and possible death.
To day 150 years since the first time that girls were enrolled, much progress has been done. At the graduation ceremony of law students, that took place in May 2022 the number of girl graduates was equal to that of boys. It was really wonderfull seeing women and men appear on stage to receive their diploma holding their healthy children, in their arms.. Something that wanted to prove that knowledge has nothing to do with reproduction.Furthermore equal number of women graduates were given the opportunity to address the ceremony and express their opinion on the world they want to live in: A world where peace justice and respect of Human rights prevail. Let us hope thatthis new generation will correct the mistakes of our generation!
